# How must dietary ingredients be listed in the Supplement Facts panel under FDA rules? Answer in under 100 words. Cite only eCFR (www.ecfr.gov) sources.

Under 21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR Title 21, as amended through 83 FR 65502, December 21, 2018), dietary ingredients in the Supplement Facts panel must be declared under the heading "Amount Per Serving" in a column aligned on the left, listed in the order specified in 21 CFR 101.9(c) for vitamins/minerals, with their quantitative amounts by weight to the right and the % Daily Value (RDI/DRV per 21 CFR 101.9(c)(8)(iv) and (c)(9)) placed on the same line. Proprietary blends and other dietary ingredients without RDIs/DRVs follow the rules of paragraph (b)(3).

## Details / How it works

Under 21 CFR 101.36(b), the Supplement Facts panel must list dietary ingredients under the heading **"Amount Per Serving"** in a column on the left, with quantitative amounts by weight in a column to the right and the **% Daily Value** on the same line. Ingredients with an established RDI or DRV (per 21 CFR 101.9(c)(8)(iv) and (c)(9))—the (b)(2)-dietary ingredients—appear first in the order and nomenclature specified in 21 CFR 101.9(c), including the modified sequence: vitamin A, C, D, E, K, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, B6, folate/folic acid, B12, biotin, pantothenic acid, **choline, calcium, iron**, phosphorus, iodine, magnesium, zinc, selenium, copper, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, **chloride, sodium, potassium**, and fluoride. Other dietary ingredients without RDIs/DRVs are declared under paragraph (b)(3) by common or usual name, indented, with a symbol and the footnote "Daily Value not established." Proprietary blends are identified by the term "Proprietary Blend" (or fanciful name), with total weight on the same line and ingredients listed in descending order of predominance by weight.

## Numbers & thresholds

| Item | Rule | Source |
|---|---|---|
| % Daily Value — rounding | Expressed to the nearest whole percent; "Less than 1%" or "<1%" used when amount is great enough to require listing but rounds to zero | 21 CFR 101.36(b)(2)(iii)(C) |
| Calories benchmark (adults/children ≥4 yrs) | 2,000 calorie diet | 21 CFR 101.36(b)(2)(iii)(D) |
| Calories benchmark (children 1–3 yrs) | 1,000 calorie diet | 21 CFR 101.36(b)(2)(iii)(D) |
| RDI location | Established in 21 CFR 101.9(c)(8)(iv) | 21 CFR 101.36(b)(2)(iii)(B) |
| DRV location | Established in 21 CFR 101.9(c)(9) | 21 CFR 101.36(b)(2)(iii)(B) |
| Protein %DV calculation | Per 21 CFR 101.9(c)(7)(ii) (corrected amount) | 21 CFR 101.36(b)(2)(iii) |
| Min. type size (standard) | 8 point body; 6 point for column headings/footnotes | 21 CFR 101.36(e)(4) |
| Small packages (<12 sq in) | 4.5 point type | 21 CFR 101.36(i)(2)(i) |

## Exceptions & edge cases

- **Ingredients not present, or present at amounts that can be declared as zero** under 21 CFR 101.9(c) (e.g., less than 2% of the RDI for vitamins and minerals), are not declared.
- **Protein** is omitted from products that, apart from ingredients added solely for technological reasons, contain only individual amino acids, and the %RDI for protein is omitted for products purported for infants through 12 months of age.
- **Subcomponents** (calories from saturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, monounsaturated fat, soluble fiber, insoluble fiber, sugar alcohol) may be declared but must be when a claim is made about them; no %DV is given for subcomponents lacking DRVs/RDIs (e.g., total sugars).
- **Proprietary blends** are exempt from establishing a Daily Value; a symbol refers to the "Daily Value not established" footnote.
- **Other dietary ingredients** that are liquid extracts from which the solvent has not been removed must list the total extract volume/weight, and if the solvent name is not in the nutrition label it must appear in the ingredient statement under 21 CFR 101.4(g).
- **Botanicals** must be identified by common or usual name and specify the plant part, per 21 CFR 101.4.
- **Separately packaged dietary supplements** (e.g., AM/PM packets) may present quantitative amounts and %DV in individual or one aggregate nutrition label under paragraph (e)(8).
