# What training does OSHA actually require, by topic and industry?

OSHA training requirements are embedded within individual standards, each applying to specific industries. As of August 4, 2026, general industry employers must provide training on lockout/tagout (1910.147), hazard communication (1910.1200), forklift operation (1910.178), and respirator use (1910.134). In construction, fall protection training is required under 1926.503. There is no single OSHA training mandate; each standard dictates its own content, frequency, and recordkeeping.

## Details / How it works

OSHA does not have a single, general training regulation. Instead, each standard that addresses a specific hazard or piece of equipment contains its own training clause. For example, the lockout/tagout standard (1910.147) requires training for authorized and affected employees. The hazard communication standard (1910.1200) mandates training on chemical hazards and protective measures. Powered industrial truck operators must be trained under 1910.178(l), and employees required to use respirators must receive training under 1910.134(k). In construction, fall protection training is required by 1926.503(a) and (c) for employees exposed to fall hazards. These training requirements are topic‑specific and apply to the industries covered by each standard.

## Numbers & thresholds

| Standard (Training Paragraph) | Topic | Training Requirement | Applicable Industries |
|-------------------------------|-------|---------------------|----------------------|
| 1910.147(c)(7) | Lockout/Tagout | Training for authorized and affected employees on energy control procedures | General Industry (part 1910) |
| 1910.1200(h) | Hazard Communication | Training on chemical hazards, labels, safety data sheets, and protective measures | General Industry (also applies to laboratories under 1910.1200(b)(3)) |
| 1910.178(l) | Powered Industrial Trucks (Forklifts) | Operator training and evaluation | General Industry |
| 1910.134(k) | Respiratory Protection | Training on respirator use, limitations, maintenance, and emergency procedures | General Industry, Shipyards, Marine Terminals, Longshoring, and Construction |
| 1926.503(a) and (c) | Fall Protection | Training for employees exposed to fall hazards (content and frequency per standard) | Construction (part 1926) |

## Exceptions & edge cases

Training requirements are not universal; they apply only when the specific hazard or equipment is present in the workplace. For example, the lockout/tagout standard does not cover construction or agriculture, and the hazard communication standard exempts certain operations such as handling sealed containers or pesticides. In construction, the fall protection training requirement can be satisfied by a site‑specific fall protection plan when guardrails, nets, or personal fall arrest systems are infeasible. Each standard includes its own list of exemptions and conditions, so employers must review the specific standard that applies to their operations.
