# What fire prevention and protection precautions does 29 CFR 1910.252 require before welding, cutting, or brazing operations begin? Answer in under 100 words. Cite only eCFR (www.ecfr.gov) sources.

Under current OSHA general industry rule 29 CFR 1910.252(a), combustibles must be relocated at least 35 feet (10.7 m) from the work site—or protected with flameproofed covers or guards where relocation is impracticable. If hazards cannot be removed, guards must confine heat, sparks, and slag; failing that, welding and cutting are prohibited. The area must be inspected and authorized beforehand, preferably by written permit. Fire watchers are required when appreciable combustibles lie within 35 feet of operation and must remain at least a half hour after work ends.

## Details / How it works

**Basic precautions:** If the object can be moved, it should be welded or cut in a safe location; otherwise, movable fire hazards are taken to a safe place, and remaining hazards are shielded with guards. **Authorization:** Before any cutting or welding begins, the designated authorizing individual inspects the area and issues precautions, preferably as a written permit. **Fire watch duties:** Watchers carry ready extinguishing equipment, know how to sound alarms, monitor all exposed areas, and stay on duty for at least a half hour after operations conclude. Management, supervisors, and welders/cutters each carry defined responsibilities, and contractors must be advised of flammable materials or hazardous conditions.

## Numbers & thresholds

| Requirement | Value |
|---|---|
| Combustible relocation distance | At least 35 ft (10.7 m) from work site |
| Floor swept clean | Radius of 35 ft (10.7 m) when combustible material present |
| Fire watcher trigger | Appreciable combustibles within 35 ft (10.7 m), easily ignited beyond 35 ft, or openings/partitions exposing combustibles within 35 ft |
| Post-operation fire watch duration | At least one-half hour after welding/cutting ends |

## Exceptions & edge cases

- Welding/cutting is prohibited in unauthorized areas, in sprinklered buildings while protection is impaired, where explosive atmospheres exist or may develop, and near large quantities of exposed, readily ignitible materials (e.g., bulk sulfur, baled paper, cotton).
- Combustible floors may be kept wet or covered with damp sand/fire-resistant shields—but arc welding personnel must then be protected from possible shock.
- Ducts and conveyor systems that might carry sparks to distant combustibles must be suitably protected or shut down.
- Metal partitions, walls, ceilings, or roofs with combustibles on the far side require precautions against ignition by conduction or radiation, including a fire watch on the opposite side.
- Hot work is never permitted on used drums, barrels, tanks, or containers until thoroughly cleaned of flammable substances; hollow spaces must be vented (and purging with inert gas is recommended).
