Details / How it works

Under 40 CFR 156.10(a)(1), every pesticide product must bear a label containing the information specified by the Act and the regulations in 40 CFR part 156. Required contents include the product name, brand, or trademark; the name and address of the producer, registrant, or person for whom produced; net contents; the product registration number; the producing establishment number; an ingredient statement; hazard and precautionary statements; directions for use; and the use classification(s).

All label text must be clearly legible and placed with conspicuousness so it is likely to be read and understood by the ordinary individual under customary conditions of purchase and use. The label must appear on or be securely attached to the immediate container and remain affixed during the foreseeable conditions and period of use; if an outer wrapper hides the label, it must also be attached to that wrapper.

Numbers & thresholds

Requirement Threshold
Minimum type size for required text 6-point or larger
Background Clear contrasting background; not obscured or crowded
Liquid net content measure Fluid ounces, pints, quarts, gallons at 68 °F (20 °C)
Solid/semisolid net content Avoirdupois pounds and ounces
Final printed labeling Submitted and accepted prior to registration
Language All required text in English

Exceptions & edge cases

For pesticides packaged in refillable containers, an appropriately sized blank area on the label may be left for the refiller to mark in net contents or the EPA establishment registration number before distribution or sale. When products are transported in bulk containers, a copy of the accepted label must accompany the shipping papers, and for bulk storage containers a label copy must be attached near the discharge control valve. Total release foggers must include specific warnings in the “Directions for Use,” such as not using more than one fogger per room. Detailed directions for use may be omitted for products used only by manufacturers, physicians or veterinarians, or formulators, under specified conditions. Restricted use pesticides must bear the statement “Restricted Use Pesticide” at the top of the front panel in a type size consistent with human hazard signal words.
